From the Phoenician, the name Adonis comes from the word "adôn" which means "lord" or "prince".

The very first famous Adonis was a Greek mythology figure. This young man of great beauty is the son of Cinyras, the King of Cyprus, and Myrrha, his daughter. Because of his dazzling beauty, Adonis attracted the goddess Aphrodite. To protect her young lover, the latter would have locked him in a box and entrusted to the goddess Persephone who fell in love in turn. He became a reason for discord between the two deities and had to spend half of the year with Aphrodite and the other with Persephone.
